DVD Identifier - wirting speed in brackets

Bought a DVD burner recently (a Gigabyte W0404) and tried two brands of DVD-R media. One of them (Sonix) produced 100% failure (4 discs, all failed at "power calibration"). The other brand (ProPlayer) was ok. So I went out and bought some JVC & Ridata discs. However, the JVC also failed at 2X writing speed (towards the end of a 4GB burn).

When checked with DVD Identifier v3.2, these are the findings :

  1. Sonix DVD-R - mfg = "not listed". Writing speed = 1x-2x-(4x)
  2. JVC DVD-R - mfg = MXL RG01. Writing speed = 1x-(2x)
  3. Ridata DVD-R - mfg = RITEK000. Writing speed = 2x-4x
  4. Ridata DVD+R - mfg = RICOHJPB. Writing speed = 2.4X

My questions :

  1. for the Sonix, did it fail because the burner couldn't recognise the media manufacturer, hence the need to perform power calibration?
  2. what is the meaning of writing speed in brackets?
  3. the Ridata DVD+R is supposed to be produced by Ritek (the dealer said so). Why does it show Ricoh? Is it an indication of a fake ID?
