Issues with an ide2fw case

Hi:

I tried to use a cdrw drive inside an ide2fw case, and it didn't work, so I'm asking what might be wrong. Here are the details:

I have a IDE to Firewire (IEEE1394) case called Speedzter 5. I bought it 1 year ago, and it has been working fine ever since. I've used it with 3 different hard disks, with 2 different CDRW (a Plextor and another which I don't recall the brand) and with one DVD Reader, and they all worked flawless!

This weekend I got an Acer 2010A CDRW drive from a friend who didn't need it anymore. After some search on the INet, I found it is actually a benq drive now (www.benq.com).

It doesn't work in the Speedzter case. Here are the symptoms:

  • If I only attach the power cable, and don't attach the IDE cable, the drive switches on (the leds light up and the motor does the initial seek).
  • If I attach the ide cable, nothing happens, the drive looks dead.

The above was using the 1-1 cable provided with the case. As the cdr drive works inside the computer with the usual master/slave cable, I tried this cable with the case, with the same results as above, in all possible combinations of master/slave connections and switches.

I have also successfully update the firmware.

Has anyone seen this before? Any idea of why this is happening? Is there a known cure, or must I lose all hope of having the 2010A working inside the fw case?

Thanks,
