If from the hard drive, XP may still be hanging on to the CD Rom drive, preventing you from flashing the drive. I'd try this: with an empty floppy, choose to format the A: drive, and check Create an MS-DOS startup disk. Copy the new HP firmware and flash program over to the floppy disk. Restart your computer with the floppy in the A: drive, and boot up from the floppy disk. (It should say Starting Windows Millennium - don't panic, it will end up at an A:\> prompt.) Then try doing the flash sequence again. I run XP, but I've never tried to flash any device (motherboard, DVD-ROM, etc.) from XP's "safe mode". Always from a DOS (6.x, Win9x) boot disk, with no or an empty config.sys file. If that doesn't work, then I might suggest upgrading to a newer CD writer. I had no problems with my HP 8100, but I've since moved on to a faster drive. Hope this helps, and good luck. Bob.
